Traveling with a dog or cat inside Mexico is possible by plane, bus or private vehicle, but each provider has different documentation, carrier, breed, temperature and size rules. For a private transfer, the simplest approach is to declare the animal's species, approximate size, carrier and number of pets before confirmation so the operator can approve the arrangement.

Domestic travel is different from exporting a pet
SENASICA export paperwork is designed for taking animals out of Mexico and should not be confused with ordinary interstate travel. For domestic flights, carriers can still require vaccination records, a recent health certificate and an approved carrier. Check the airline's current document list before travel.
Flying with a dog or cat
Volaris, Viva and Aeroméxico apply different cabin and checked-pet rules, including combined pet+carrier weight, carrier dimensions, age and breed restrictions. Brachycephalic and other restricted animals may face additional limits because of heat and breathing risk. Treat every airline rule as date-sensitive and confirm it directly before purchase.
Regional aircraft have much less flexibility
The Oaxaca City–Puerto Escondido regional aircraft is small and has tight baggage capacity. Pet acceptance should be confirmed directly with the operator rather than assumed from the rules of a larger commercial airline.
Bus travel: follow the operator's policy, not generic advice
ADO publishes detailed conditions for transporting pets, including carrier requirements, route-duration and temperature restrictions, and rules for where the animal travels. Some versions of the policy have also referenced sedation. Sedation is a veterinary decision, not travel advice from OAXWAY: if a carrier requires it, discuss whether it is appropriate and safe with your veterinarian before choosing that transport method.
Shared vans are usually not a good pet solution
A colectivo is crowded, has limited storage and is not designed around an animal carrier. Acceptance may be discretionary and conditions can be stressful for the pet. Do not rely on a shared van as the primary plan unless the operator explicitly confirms the animal and carrier.
Private transfers with pets
A private vehicle is usually the easiest road option to coordinate because the pet stays with your group and the trip can include planned hydration/rest stops. Approval is still required. Tell OAXWAY the animal's type, approximate size, number of pets and whether you will use a carrier so the operator can confirm the vehicle setup.
Heat and road-travel basics
- Carry water and a bowl.
- Never leave an animal in a closed parked vehicle in the Oaxaca Coast heat.

Pet-friendly lodging and beaches
Puerto Escondido has a growing supply of pet-friendly hotels and rentals, but deposits, size limits and house rules vary. Confirm directly with the property. Some local beach guides identify Bacocho as dog-friendly, but beach access rules and ocean conditions can change; respect local signage and keep pets out of dangerous surf.
