What to do if the toll highway closes
The established alternate is federal Route 175 from Oaxaca City through Miahuatlán and Pochutla, connecting onward toward Puerto Escondido. It is a much longer mountain drive—roughly 5–7 hours—with many curves and changing elevation. Before using the alternate, confirm the reason for the closure and the condition of the alternate road as well.

Why road status matters even when the highway is open
The toll highway reduced the Oaxaca City–coast drive dramatically, but it crosses mountainous terrain and remains exposed to rain, slope instability, repairs, crashes and occasional demonstrations. “Open” does not necessarily mean “normal travel time.” For a flight or fixed appointment, add margin rather than planning around the fastest possible drive.
Rainy season
June through October typically brings the highest rainfall on the Oaxaca Coast and in the Sierra Sur. Heavy rain can reduce visibility and contribute to rockfall, landslides or temporary lane controls. Conditions can change faster than an editorial page can be updated, which is why same-day official confirmation matters.
