Oaxaca’s main rainy season is roughly June through October and overlaps with the eastern Pacific hurricane season. Heavy rain can trigger landslides, rockfall, washouts, one-lane traffic and temporary road closures on the mountain and coastal highways. Travel is usually still possible, but same-day road conditions should be checked and flight-sensitive itineraries need a generous buffer.

What rain does to the roads
The Oaxaca–coast routes cross steep mountain terrain and low coastal river areas. A road may remain open but operate one lane at a time while crews clear material.

How to plan a rainy-season trip

- Travel in daylight when possible.
- Leave several extra hours when the road trip connects to a flight.
- Keep the toll-free Route 175 alternative in mind, but remember it is a long mountain route.
- Carry water, snacks, charged phones and any medication you may need during a delay.
- Do not follow an unfamiliar detour into the mountains simply because a navigation app suggests it.
Rainy season does not mean you should avoid Oaxaca
Most travelers still reach Puerto Escondido, Mazunte, Zipolite and Huatulco during the rainy months. The operational difference is that travel plans should be less rigid: allow time, avoid risky night driving and be willing to adjust if authorities close or restrict a section.
