Oaxaca Coast destinations
choose the right beach town and airport
Compare Puerto Escondido, Mazunte, San Agustinillo, Zipolite, Puerto Ángel, Huatulco and Chacahua by atmosphere, swimming, airport access and transportation before choosing where to stay.
The Oaxaca Coast is a chain of very different destinations rather than one interchangeable beach region. Puerto Escondido is the main surf/town base; Mazunte is slower and wellness-oriented; San Agustinillo is quieter and more swimming-focused; Zipolite has nudist-beach and LGBTQ+ culture; Puerto Ángel is a working fishing port; Huatulco is a multi-bay resort destination; and Chacahua is a remote lagoon national park reached by road and boat.
- Choose the destination first, then choose the airport and transfer.
- HUX is usually the closer airport for Mazunte, San Agustinillo, Zipolite and Huatulco.
- PXM is the natural airport for Puerto Escondido and a common western gateway for the coast.
- Ocean conditions vary sharply by beach; a famous beach is not automatically a swimming beach.
Quick destination match
- Puerto Escondido — surf, neighborhoods, restaurants and the largest local base.
- Mazunte — Pueblo Mágico, Punta Cometa, wellness and slower travel.
- San Agustinillo — quieter beach village and a better fit for relaxed swimming-oriented stays.
- Zipolite — optional nudism, LGBTQ+-friendly travel and a stronger alternative scene.
- Puerto Ángel — working fishing port and a more local base.
- Huatulco — nine-bay layout, resorts, marina and protected coves.
- Chacahua — remote wetlands, mangroves and road-plus-boat logistics.
Airport choice is part of destination choice
Do not choose a flight only from the city name on the ticket. The coast has three relevant airports — OAX inland, PXM at Puerto Escondido and HUX at Huatulco — and the most convenient airport depends on your actual hotel. The upcoming airport pages use that same destination-first logic.
