Fuel availability on the corridor is improving, but services are still far less frequent than in Oaxaca City or Puerto Escondido. The safest plan is simple: fill the tank before joining the highway and do not plan the trip around a single mountain gas station.
Road works and current conditions
The highway is relatively new and has had ongoing slope-stabilization and maintenance work. The Spanish source recorded intermittent one-lane sections between roughly km 36 and km 56 on July 29, 2026. That is dated information, not a live traffic feed. Check the current road-status page and official sources on the day you travel.
What to keep in the car
- Cash in smaller bills for tolls and incidental expenses.
- Water and a small amount of food.
- A charged phone plus a power bank.
- Spare tire and the rental car's basic roadside kit.
- Offline map or written route notes because coverage can drop.
- Driver's license, passport/ID, insurance documentation and vehicle/rental papers.
If the car breaks down
Move as far from traffic as safely possible, use hazard lights and warning triangles, and note the nearest kilometer marker. Phone coverage may be intermittent, so do not depend on immediate connectivity.
When not to drive yourself
