175D: the fast route from Oaxaca City to the coast
For most travelers leaving Oaxaca City for Puerto Escondido, 175D is the practical default. It cuts the mountain crossing to roughly 2.5–3 hours in normal conditions and avoids much of the old road's continuous turning. It is a toll road and can still have maintenance or weather-related restrictions.
Federal Route 175: scenic, free and much slower
The old Route 175 crosses the Sierra Sur through Miahuatlán and San José del Pacífico before descending toward Pochutla and Puerto Ángel. It can take roughly 5–7 hours, has many curves and is far more susceptible to fog and motion sickness. Choose it deliberately for the mountain destinations, scenery or as an alternate route—not because it is the fastest road to Puerto Escondido.
Federal Highway 200: the coastal connector
Highway 200 is the road travelers repeatedly encounter once they are on the Pacific side. It links Puerto Escondido, Pochutla, access points for Mazunte and Zipolite, Huatulco and other coastal destinations. It is not the main road down from Oaxaca City; it is the road that connects the coast along its length.
135D: how Central Mexico reaches Oaxaca City
Travelers driving from Puebla or Mexico's central highway network commonly approach Oaxaca via the Cuacnopalan–Oaxaca toll highway (135D). From Oaxaca City they then connect to 175D for the fast descent to the Pacific Coast.
